Now it is time to get you even more excited! Across each and every event there are numerous athletes to watch out for. Below are just some names and some events to keep your eyes on.
The sprint events are already generating buzz, with the iconic Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce eyeing her sixth 100m title. She is up against stiff competition from the likes of Shericka Jackson, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Marie Josee-Ta Lou. The 200m promises to be equally gripping, with Gabby Thomas, Shericka Jackson, and Dina Asher-Smith ready to fight for that crown. Each of these women have won an international medal in the event.
Moving up in distance, with the absence of Sydney McLaughlin in the flat 400m due to injury, it has left enthusiasts wondering who will seize the coveted title. The event is now wide open, with Shaunae Miller-Uibo, the two-time Olympic champion, returning to the track after a brief hiatus. She will return to the track five months after giving birth and has not yet run a 400m this year. A constellation of talents including Britton Wilson, Marileidy Paulino, Natalia Kaczmarek, and Rhasidat Adeleke are also set to vie for this title.
Now let’s add barriers to the mix. Femke Bol stands as a favourite in the 400m hurdles, seeking her first major title after securing an Olympic Bronze and World Silver. In the middle-distance events, the 800m race is anticipated to showcase a duel between Keely Hodgkinson and Athing Mu. While Mu’s appearance at the championships remains unconfirmed, the Commonwealth Games Champion, Mary Moraa, is poised to add intrigue to the event.
The distance events are set to be equally captivating, with Faith Kipyegon seeking a third 1500m title and eyeing double gold in the 5000m. Kipyegon has has an unforgettable season so far, setting world records in the 1500m, mile and 5000m. Sifan Hassan’s remarkable versatility will also be on display as she aims for another treble of medals, mirroring her Tokyo Olympics success. She will be welcomed by an added challenge as she navigates the demanding schedule of the 1500m heats and 10,000m final on the same day.
In the field events, Yulimar Rojas commands attention as the favourite in the women’s triple jump, while the high jump competition promises excitement with Eleanor Patterson, Nicola Olyslagers, Yaroslava Mahuchik, and Iryna Gerashchenko contending for victory. And let’s not forget the javelin, where Kitacguchi Haruka, last year’s bronze medalist, boasts the world-leading throw, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.
