Track and field is widely recognized as one of the most inclusive and diverse sports for young girls, welcoming participants of all backgrounds, body types, and athletic abilities. As the most popular sport for middle and high school girls in the United States, track and field offers not only physical benefits but also fosters academic, social, and emotional growth.
At TrackGirlz, we are passionate about championing the positive impact of track and field. Founded by Olympian and Olympic Coach Mechelle Lewis Freeman, we are on a mission to equip girls with the tools they need to succeed—whether it’s in the classroom, on the track, or in life. Through our programs, we focus on health, academics, leadership, and social empowerment to help girls across the U.S. overcome the barriers that too often prevent them from participating in sports.

The Power of Participation
Research from the Women’s Sports Foundation highlights that by the time girls hit 14, they are twice as likely as boys to drop out of sports due to factors like social stigma, safety concerns, transportation issues, and a lack of positive role models. These challenges can be especially pronounced for girls from underserved communities. As a result, many girls miss out on the lifelong benefits that come with sports participation, including improved self-esteem, better academic performance, and the development of critical leadership and teamwork skills.
However, track and field stands out as one of the few sports that truly bridges this gap. Studies show that participation in track and field not only helps girls build physical strength but also improves their academic performance. In fact, it’s one of the only sports where young female athletes have been shown to excel academically more than their peers in other sports.

Why TrackGirlz Matters
TrackGirlz is working to change the narrative for young girls, particularly those in underrepresented communities. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a long-term goal has been set to have 63.3% of students playing sports by 2030. However, this objective is far from being achieved, especially for those with the lowest participation rates—children from underserved families, racial and ethnic minorities, girls, and children with disabilities. TrackGirlz is leveling the playing field by ensuring all girls have equal access to safe, fun, and enriching physical activities that help their minds and bodies flourish.
By providing mentorship, support, and resources to girls of all backgrounds, TrackGirlz is creating a network of role models and champions who help the next generation of young women feel empowered both on and off the track. The programs also focus on making sure that every girl—no matter her background—has the opportunity to experience the benefits of athletics, leadership, and self-confidence.

The Road Ahead
TrackGirlz is not just about encouraging girls to run faster or jump higher—it’s about building a foundation of hard work, determination, and leadership skills that will last a lifetime. As we continue to expand our programs and reach, we aim to have an impact that will resonate far beyond the track.
As part of our commitment to supporting and empowering young girls, we are kicking off new monthly mentorship sessions that connect athletes with inspiring role models in the track and field community. This past month, we had the privilege of hosting Alexis Holmes, a standout athlete, who shared valuable insights on competing at the pinnacle of the sport. Stay tuned for who is up next!
