Get ready to lace up those sneakers and hit the track because National Exercise Day is here! This day, celebrated annually on April 18th, is dedicated to encouraging everyone to participate in physical activity and exercise. It is a chance for people of all ages to embrace the joy of movement and prioritize their health and wellness.
For girls, participating in sports isn’t just about staying fit; it’s about building confidence, resilience, and a sense of empowerment. Track and field, in particular, offers a unique platform for girls to showcase their strength, agility, and determination. Whether it’s sprinting down the straightaway, jumping into a long jump pit, or launching a javelin into the air, every moment taken on the track or on the field showcases the potential of young female athletes. National Exercise Day is a celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and the possibilities that come from moving our bodies.
As for TrackGirlz, we are dedicated to empowering girls through track and field and have created a track and field empowerment curriculum to do just that! Participation in track and field has been found to lead to higher education at four-year colleges and positively impact behaviours, self-esteem, and overall health for teen girls. As the highest participatory sport for middle and high school girls in the United States, track and field is one of the most diverse and inclusive sports for girls, appealing to various ethnicities, body types, and athletic abilities. Girls are able to build a strong foundation of hard work, determination, and leadership skills that last a lifetime.
Within the TrackGirlz curriculum, we have put together what we like to call ‘tracktivities’ – beginner to intermediate track and field workouts to develop foundational strength, power, and speed in the form of running, throwing, and jumping. Participants are encouraged to run on any accessible surface, including grass fields, gym floors, roads, treadmills, or indoor and outdoor tracks. No equipment is necessary.
This National Exercise Day give this workout a go and remember to warm up properly!
Let’s remember that every step we take is a step towards a healthier, more empowered future. So, here’s to the girls on the track, the field, and beyond – may you continue to soar to new heights, run to faster times and throw further distances.
